The Rock-n-Roll Smile Hall (muraling in the city)

December 17, 2013

I was benefited by a mistake. A large home improvement store didn’t quite make a new paint match the pre-existing wall. The home owners, who have had me paint for them before, called me up with an idea. Instead of fixing all the touch-ups on the hall wall that now were too dark, they asked me to paint over them– Lucky me. I used the shapes on the wall as inspiration for what I would paint. This worked the same way one would gaze at clouds and come up with images–elephants, cats, a large-breasted lady with one leg.

I spent two days painting. I was visited by two cats. I had a “ghost” turn on the cd player for me. I had good conversation and hot drinks. I am glad I was given the chance to paint over some inspiring mess-ups.

As I was painting I was listening to The War on Drugs and the phrase “The Rock-n-Roll Smile” came to me. I didn’t think too much about it– I just painted the words and moved on. That is when the best things happen. Don’t think too much. Just go with the inspirational urge.
