A Friendly Scarecrow

October 22, 2024

During the month of September I built a scarecrow out of found objects and scrap wood. I wasn’t sure how to build a sculpture of a man that would be resistant to the elements and stay upright. I decided to build it as a sitting figure — the more legs the more stable. I made him out of old chairs and some boards from a construction project crate. His head is a many decades old metal jug I found in the woods. He is also made of an old cedar fence donated to me from a home in Decatur, GA.

I made the scarecrow for PNC Bank and it is now on display at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens for the month of October. They placed it right inside the entrance in a wonderful spot surrounded by pumpkins and mums. I hope he enjoys his time there and the thousands of folks who stop by and say, “Hello…”

I have been to see him two times and he seems to be enjoying himself. If you see him on your visit tell him ol’ BlackCatTips Says, “Hey.”

My friend said he might be a Care-Crow instead of a Scare-Crow since he isn’t scary. I like that.

See you soon,
