A Table for Sandwiches and Stories

March 28, 2025

This week I painted at a couple locations away from the studio. I started off the day by putting some finishing touches on the painted fence project. I wrote out a phrase we had agreed upon… One Sun. One Moon. Take Care. Me and You.

Then I drove over to my friend’s Subaru repair shop in Avondale Estates, GA — Six Star Subaru.

They are real friendly there and they had asked me to paint on their new picnic table. It sits up front on the lawn — waiting for springtime lunches, drippy popsicles, and whatever else finds its way to its surface — Maybe two friends and coffee. I didn’t plan much—just grabbed some brushes and let things happen.

A purple tree grew across the planks. Then some leaves showed up and some green hills with eyes and crooked little smiles. Bees flew in, and daisies followed. The whole thing started to feel like a little world of its own.

Painting a picnic table felt good. It’s useful art—something people will sit at, lean on, spill crumbs across. I like that. I like painting on used items — or items that will be used. I enjoy the fact that art can be useful and art can be on things people normally don’t associate with painting.

Here are a few photos from the day I finished it. It was windy and sunny. A good day for bees and brushstrokes.

Thanks for looking. Hope you find a good place to sit this week.

See you soon,
